Project SUCCESS: Content Professional Development (Day 4)

Four days of PD focused on how 5th and 6th grade content (math, science, and social studies) teachers  can use the ELPS and sheltered content instruction in planning and assessment.  Project SUCCESS will provide the texts Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model (Sheltered Instructional Observation Protocol) (Echevarria, Vogt, and Short 2017) and 99 MORE Ideas and Activities for Teaching English Learners with the SIOP Model (SIOP Series) (Voght, Echevarria, Washam, 2014) to CFBISD project participants.

  • Day 1 - Principals of First and Second Language Acquisition, building on foundational knowledge in teaching sheltered content instruction and English as a second language (Oct 1)
  • Day 2 - The SIOP Model's comprehensible input, lesson preparation and strategies (Oct 2)
  • Day 3 - Collecting information about students and exploring content-specific learner profiles (Nov 5)
  • Day 4 - Planning a lesson with adaptations and English language proficiency standards (ELPS) (Nov 6)

Section 9501 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), regarding the equitable participation of private school children, teachers, and other educational personnel applies to this project.  Therefore, if your school serves English language learners in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD area, we are inviting your PK-2, 4th, 5th and 6th grade teachers with English language learners in their classrooms to attend this professional development.
