The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction is designed to enhance knowledge and expertise by combining theoretical perspectives and research-based practices. Offering seven specialization options, this 30-hour graduate program can be completed fully online.

How it works

  • The 30-hour Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction requires four departmental core courses (12 hours), and four courses (12 hours) within the specialization area and six hours of electives (selected in consultation with advisor).
  • Online course schedule rotates throughout fall, summer, and spring with many courses offered each semester — allowing you to easily fit the courses offered to your personal schedule.
  • There are seven specialization fully within the department including Bilingual Education, Early Childhood Education, English as a Second Language Education, Literacy Education and Mathematics Education. Other specializations also are offered with classes from across the university in instructional technologies, social studies and more.

The College of Education's requirements are:

  • Grade Point Average (GPA): GPA of 2.88 overall or 3.0 in the final 60 hours at the baccalaureate level. 
  • Teaching Certificate or Equivalent: A valid Texas teaching certificate or equivalent, which may include teaching certificates from other states or requisite experience as verified by an administrator.
  • Essay: A thoughtful, well-organized 2-3 page double-spaced essay on the applicant's personal philosophy of teaching, with concrete examples of that philosophy applied to the applicant's own teaching practices. 
  • Letter of Intent: A letter of intent to pursue Master's studies in Curriculum and Instruction (in a few sentences, include that you are applying to the C&I M.Ed program, intended specialization, and the reasons for seeking it).
  • Resume: A professional Curriculum Vita (CV) or resume.
Courses

The M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction requires students complete 30 hours of coursework that includes 12 hours of core courses, 12 hours of specialization courses, and 6 hours of electives. Courses are typically three credit hours each. If a specialization is outside the department then students must take both their electives in the department. Full time enrollment requires 9 hours. While time requirements vary from week-to-week and course-to-course, students should expect to dedicate considerable attention to their course each week. The portfolio and comprehensive oral exam (non-credit) must be completed in the graduating semester at the scheduled time.

An additional 12 hours are selected by the candidate from one of the resource areas with the approval of the departmental advisor and program coordinator.

Electives, 6 hours


In addition, 6 hours of electives are selected from courses in curriculum and instruction, early childhood studies, literacy, bilingual education, or ESL, but students whose resource areas are in these fields may choose electives from other programs.

Note


Students will satisfactorily complete an oral comprehensive capstone presentation at the end of the program.

Applying for financial aid

  1. Apply for financial aid online at fafsa.gov. The application is required for all types of financial aid, including Pell and other federal grants, state grants and loans. The FAFSA and Renewal FAFSA are available annually.
  2. You must enroll in 6 hours (over one or two online sessions) in order to be eligible for financial aid.
  3. Financial aid awards will be disbursed 10 days prior to the first day of class. Awards will not disburse if you are enrolled in only 3 credit hours.
