    Educational Psychology (PhD) with a concentration in Human Development and Family Science

    Focuses on individual growth and development across the lifespan as well as interpersonal interactions within the family context; this concentration also provides advanced study in developmental and family theory; social, emotional, and cognitive development; and marriage and family relationships.

    Submit Application Documents

    • Three written letters of recommendation from academic and/or professional references. These letters must be specifically written for the current application, signed by the reference, and printed on his/her official letterhead. Personal references are not accepted.  
    • Professional resume that delineates previous work, educational experiences, membership and involvement in professional organizations, and scholarly activities.
    • Personal statement between 1-3 pages that explicitly addresses your goals and rationale for applying to the desired concentration and degree at UNT.
    • GRE scores are not required.

    All departmental admission decisions are based on a holistic review of the applicant's submitted materials. Applicants that are strong in all areas will have first priority for admission.

    The doctoral program in educational psychology requires a minimum of 63 (78 hours if admitted without a Master’s degree) hours of course work and research.

    Those entering the program without a master’s degree are expected to fulfill the following requirements, plus two core courses in the MS with a major in educational psychology, and a minimum of three additional graduate-level courses with the advisor’s approval.

    Note: The following requirements are for students entering the program having completed a related master’s degree.

    • EPSY 5123 - Human Development Across the Life Span

    Major requirements, 21 hours


    • EPSY 6010 - Statistics for Educational Research
    • EPSY 6020 - Research Methods in Education
    • EPSY 6210 - Multiple Regression Analysis and Related Methods
    • EPSY 6220 - Advanced Testing and Measurement
    • EPSY 6230 - Theory and Application of Hierarchical Linear Modeling
    • EPSY 6280 - Qualitative Research in Education
    • EPSY 6290 - Multivariate Statistics in Education

    Concentration, 21 hours

    Human development and family science


    • EPSY 6103 - Cognitive and Language Development
    • EPSY 6113 - Application of Developmental Theories in Research
    • EPSY 6153 - Social-Emotional Development
    • EPSY 6163 - Diversity in Individuals, Families and Schools
    • EPSY 6313 - Application of Family Theory in Research
    • EPSY 6413 - Current Issues in Family Science
    • Plus 1 elective course in human development and/or family studies from inside or outside the department, with advisor’s approval

    Supervised research practice, 3 hours


    • EPSY 6030 - Practicum, Field Problem or Internship

    Dissertation, 9 hours minimum


    • EPSY 6950 - Doctoral Dissertation (3, 6 or 9 hours per semester)
