Dr. Justin Watts is an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at the University of North Texas. His primary research interests include: the impact of child maltreatment on development across the lifespan; the relationship between early adverse experiences and the development of negative coping mechanisms and post-traumatic stress; and addressing the effects of child maltreatment exposure on maternal mental health and parenting behaviors. Dr. Watts has been active in the areas of research, teaching, and service. Dr. Watts has over 35 scholarly works in refereed and/or peer-reviewed dissemination outlets.

Dr. Watts received his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the Pennsylvania State University in 2016, his master's degree in Counseling, and his bachelor's degree in Psychology, both from the University of North Texas. He teaches graduate coursework in trauma and crisis intervention, addictions counseling, teaching counselor education, practicum, and counseling theories. Dr. Watts is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC).
