Application Deadlines: 

Fall Admission: March 15*
Spring Admission: October 1* (Beginning with Spring 2028 admissions, the spring application deadline will change to October 15.)

*Applications must be fully submitted and processed by these dates.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their applications at least one month before the deadline to allow enough time for processing through GradCAS. 

Important Deadline Information
  • Applications must be fully submitted and processed by UNT Graduate Admissions by 11:59 PM CST on the program deadline, including all required materials and official transcripts, for review by the Counseling Program.
    • The recommended submission deadline is one month before the deadline to allow adequate processing time for GradCAS, to process all application materials.
        • Please note that the UNT Counseling Program has no control over the reviewing/processing speed of GradCAS, the centralized paperwork processer for all UNT graduate applications.
  • Submission of materials close to the final deadline may prevent applications from being processed in time, even if those materials were requested prior to the deadline.  It is your responsibility to monitor your application status and respond promptly to all requests.
  • Applications must be complete by the final deadline to be reviewed.  Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or considered for admission for the semester, regardless of the reason for incompletion.

Admissions Requirements

Graduate admission requirements include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, calculated using either the overall undergraduate GPA, or the last 60 completed undergraduate credit hours.

Application Materials: 

  • Official Transcripts-  You must submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities you have attended.  These can be ordered through the GradCAS application.

  •  CV/Resume-  Please submit a resume or CV. (2-page limit) 

  • Provide three professional references- This can include current or past professors, current or past employers/supervisors, colleagues, or from an individual who is professionally acquainted with your work. Personal references are not accepted. Your evaluators will be emailed a link to complete a reference evaluation form. If they would like to also submit a letter of recommendation, they can upload that with the evaluation. Letters of recommendation are not required but will be accepted. Please note that your application will not be processed until all three evaluations have been received.
  • Personal Statement- (1-page limit**) Download Required Template

                   (12pt, Times New Roman, 1" margins, single-spaced) 

    • If relevant: Identification of fluency (e.g., reading, writing, speaking) in both English and another language (at the top of the template); 
    • Briefly describe your desired clinical populations, client needs, and/or clinical settings of interest related to the field of counseling; 
    • Describe one or more significant life events / life experiences that contributed to your interest with your desired clinical populations, client needs, and/or clinical settings of interest 
    • With regard to your desired clinical populations, client needs, and/or clinical settings of interest: Why are you seeking a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling over other licensure-seeking degrees (PhD/PsyD In Clinical or Counseling Psychology; Master's in Social Work) and other counseling-related programs (Marriage/Family Therapy; Rehabilitation Counseling; School Counseling)? 
    • Describe your long-term aspirations related to completing a master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (e.g., traditional clinical work, professional/community leadership, research/teaching through a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision); 
    • Summarize significant work history/activities demonstrating your interest and commitment to the field of counseling (should be expanded upon in your resume/CV); and 
    • (optional) Any other information that you think would be helpful in evaluating your potential success in the program and as a counselor. 

**Writing samples that exceed one page will not be considered. 

You are responsible for ensuring that all application materials are submitted and processed by the application deadline. 

 

INTERVIEW

Selected applicants will be asked to attend an orientation meeting and complete a group interview.  The Master's Admissions Committee conducts a holistic review of all complete applications.  Applicants will receive an email about their admissions decision within one month of the group interview. 

 

CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK 

Individuals granted provisional admission must complete a Criminal History Background Check.  Information on background checks will be provided in your provisional admissions notification.  Provisional admission is pending until receipt of a satisfactory background check.
