Meadows Chair for Excellence in Education
The Meadows Chair for Excellence in Education was established in 1996 in honor of philanthropists Al and Virginia Meadows, whose life experiences shaped their belief that all Texans deserve equal opportunities to live healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives. The Meadows Chair for Excellence in Education embodies the University of North Texas College of Education’s commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and service—guided by the belief that education transforms lives and strengthens communities, the Meadows legacy continues to advance opportunity across Texas and beyond.
Established as a perpetual resource for good, the Meadows Chair enables UNT to attract and retain nationally distinguished scholars and exemplary professional educators from across the field of education. Chair holders contribute to the College of Education’s mission through impactful teaching, innovative research, and meaningful service—strengthening faculty excellence and shaping the preparation of educators nationwide.
The endowment support provides a stipend for the Chair holder and funds critical activities such as research initiatives, professional travel, and academic support. These resources empower the Chair to extend its influence well beyond the classroom, advancing knowledge, informing practice, and positively affecting learners at all levels.
The College of Education stewards the Meadows Chair through a dedicated faculty committee, with all appointments and expenditures made in accordance with university policies and with the concurrence of the Dean—ensuring the Meadows legacy is honored with integrity, purpose, and lasting impact.
The Meadows Chair position is currently vacant at this time. Appointed chair to be updated soon.
The position has been previously been held by Dr. Nancy Nelson (2013 - 2019) & Dr. James Hoffman (2022 - 2024).
