The Mike Moses Endowment in Educational Leadership honors the significant role of UNT and school districts to focus on the research and preparation of outstanding educational leaders in the State and the Nation. The Mike Moses Chair in Educational Administration honors the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Mike Moses, a transformative leader whose career has shaped public education across Texas and beyond. Dr. Moses served with distinction as Commissioner of Education for the Texas Education Agency (1995–1999) and later as Superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District (2001–2004), one of the largest and most complex school systems in the nation. Dr. Mike Moses served as a Texas educator for more than 30 years, and once held the endowed position.
The position was funded by Donald A. Buchholz, a UNT alumnus and former member of the UNT Board of Regents. Buchholz also is the founder of Southwest Securities Inc., which supports several programs and scholarships at UNT's College of Education. The purpose of the endowment is to elevate the work and visibility of UNT and area school districts' leadership, increasing its visibility and dedication to schools and research. The endowment focuses on the college of education's mission to develop the best area.
Widely respected for his steady leadership and vision, Dr. Moses is credited with stabilizing Dallas ISD, advancing a culture of accountability and excellence, and securing passage of a historic $1.37 billion bond that strengthened the district’s future and renewed public confidence. Following his service in public office, he continued to influence educational leadership statewide as a trusted consultant, mentoring districts and guiding the selection of superintendents committed to student success.
At the University of North Texas College of Education, the Mike Moses Chair reflects UNT’s commitment to preparing bold, ethical, and innovative leaders in educational administration. Distributions from the endowment directly support the Chair’s work through scholarship, research, professional engagement, and program enhancement, ensuring ongoing impact in leadership preparation and educational practice. The Chair strengthens UNT’s role as a national leader in educator preparation and policy-informed leadership.
The Mike Moses Endowment in Educational Leadership Chair position is currently vacant at this time. Appointed chair to be updated soon.
The position has been previously been held by Dr. Jane Huffman (2014 - 2017), Dr. Elizabeth Murakamo (2017 - 2020) & Dr. Katherine Mansfield (2023 - 2025).
