Overview

The Teacher Internship Pathway provides graduate teacher candidates the opportunity to complete field experience while working full time as a teacher of record in an approved North Texas school district.

This pathway allows qualified candidates to earn a salary and valuable classroom experience while completing certification requirements through the University of North Texas.

Pathway Highlights

Teacher interns are employed by a district as the teacher of record in their certification area while simultaneously completing their internship requirements.

During the internship year, candidates will:

Be in real classrooms
Be employed full time as a classroom teacher in an approved UNT partner district.
Gain experience
Work under a teaching certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
Receive dedicated support
Receive ongoing supervision and mentorship from a UNT field supervisor and campus mentor teacher.
Grow as an educator
Engage in reflection, professional growth, and evaluation throughout the year.

Eligibility

To qualify for the Teacher Internship Pathway, candidates must:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree
  • Be admitted to the graduate teacher certification program within the College of Education.
  • Meet all Teacher Education Program (TEd) admission requirements.
  • Maintain the required 3.0 GPA in graduate coursework.
  • Complete all required certification exam testing and coursework prerequisites before beginning the internship semester.
  • Obtain an official teaching position in a TEA-accredited school with a UNT district partner that aligns with their certification area.
  • Be recommended a probationary or intern teaching certificate through TEA prior to beginning the internship.
Program Structure
The internship typically spans one academic year and includes:
  • Continuous mentorship from a campus-based mentor and UNT field supervisor.
  • Regular observations, evaluations, and professional development sessions.
  • Support from the UNT Educator Preparation Office to ensure alignment with state certification standards.
Upon successful completion of the internship and all program and state requirements, candidates will be recommended for Texas teacher certification

Application & Deadlines

Candidates must:

  1. Complete the Clinical Practice Application for the semester they plan to begin the internship.
  2. Submit a completed Statement of Eligibility in an approved partner district.
  3. Coordinate with the Clinical Practice Office to verify eligibility for the probationary or intern certificate.

Program Support

Candidates completing internships through this pathway receive full support from the UNT Educator Preparation Program, including:

  • Supervision by a university field supervisor
  • Guidance from a mentor teacher on campus
  • Professional feedback, documentation, and growth support throughout the semester
Program Completion & Certification

Upon successful completion of the program and all state requirements, candidates will be recommended for a standard Texas teacher certification.
