About the Program
The UNT Teacher Residency Program is an innovative, year-long, paid, classroom-based experience that allows aspiring educators to learn through hands-on teaching while completing their degree and teacher certification at the University of North Texas.

Residents are paired with experienced host teachers in partner school districts, gaining valuable real-world experience while receiving guidance and support from UNT faculty, site coordinators, and field supervisors.

Eligibility

The UNT Teacher Residency Program is open to undergraduate teacher candidates pursuing:

  • EC–6 ESL Certification
  • EC–6 Bilingual Certification
  • EC-6 + EC–12 SPED Specialist Certification
Eligibility Requirements
  • Admitted to the UNT Teacher Education Program
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA across all GPA categories
  • TSI Complete
  • On track to begin Block B in Fall 2026
  • Complete all required certification exam testing and coursework prerequisites before entering Teacher Residency Program.

Selection is competitive and based on academic performance, professionalism, and commitment to the teaching profession.

Program Completion & Certification

Upon successful completion of the UNT Teacher Residency Program and all university and state requirements, residents will be recommended for the Enhanced Texas Teacher Certification through the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

As part of this pathway, residents are not required to complete the PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities) certification exam for initial certification.
