Testing Deadlines

The certification exams are program benchmarks that you are required to complete in order to progress through the program. Failure to complete the exams by established deadlines will result in delays in graduation or dismissal from the Teacher Education Program.

Undergraduate Candidates

In order to begin Clinical Teaching, you must take and pass your content (Art, Music, or Theatre) exam by the Clinical Practice deadline.  The deadlines remain the same each semester:

Fall Clinical Teaching Deadline Spring Clinical Teaching Deadline
July 15th December 15th

For example, if you are scheduled to start Clinical Teaching (your final semester) in Spring 2027, then the last possible date to take your real content exam (Art, Music, or Theatre) would be December 15, 2026.

You will take and pass your pedagogy exam during your Clinical Teaching semester.

Post-Bac Candidates

You are required to complete testing during the semesters you are enrolled in EDCI 5010, EDBE 5590, and EDCI 5030. The dates to take your real exams will depend on the semester you are enrolled in these courses, but remain constant each year:

Fall Semester Deadline Spring Semester Deadline
December 15th July 15th

If you are planning to complete Internship instead of Clinical Teaching, you must pass your required exams by May 1st of the Spring semester before you plan to start Internship. If you have not received a passing score on your certification exams, you will not be eligible to receive a Statement of Eligibility and will not be permitted to complete Internship.

Practice Exam Requirement

All candidates must achieve an appropriate score on a practice exam in order to receive approval to take their actual exams. In most cases, you will have two options that you may chose from in order to complete the practice exam requirements.

Canvas Practice Exam Option

Practice exams for the following certification tests are available in the TExES Canvas Course , which you will receive access to upon formal admission to the Teacher Education Program. To complete the practice exam requirement through the Canvas course, you must achieve the associated score.

Available Exams Minimum Score - Multiple Choice
Art EC-12 70% overall
Music EC-12 70% overall
Theatre EC-12 70% overall
PPR EC-12 70% overall
ESL Supplemental (Post-Bac Only) 70% overall

240 Tutoring Option

Contact the TExES Success Office at COE-TSO@unt.edu for a link to the discount for $25/month if you are interested in the 240 Tutoring option.

NOTE: Art EC-12 and Theatre EC-12 are not available through 240 Tutoring. You must use the Canvas option for these exams, but you may opt to use 240 Tutoring for PPR.

You can opt to use 240 Tutoring by enrolling in the courses related to your certification exams and completing the following requirements:

  • Complete the Plan To Pass/Diagnostic Test to determine strengths and weaknesses. This exam report can be downloaded and submitted to coe-tso@unt.edu as your baseline/initial practice exam.  Even if you score an 80 on the plan to pass/diagnostic test, it will not count towards test approval, but we will count it as your initial exam. Please include your name and UNT ID number when you submit the report.
  • Complete a minimum of six-clock hours of study for any exam you are planning to use 240 Tutoring for. That means, if you are planning to use 240 Tutoring as your practice exam requirement for both your content and PPR exams, you must complete six clock-hours in your content area, and six clock-hours in PPR to qualify.
  • Pass a quiz in each unit to unlock a full-length practice exam.
  • Pass a full-length practice exam with an 80 or better.
  • Once you have the appropriate scores and clock-hours, download your score report and send it to COE-TSO@unt.edu with your name and UNT ID number.  The TExES Office will verify that you have completed the clock-hour requirement before accepting your score report.

TExES Exam Registration

After you have met the practice exam requrirement, you will receive approval to take your real certification exams.  The TExES Success Office will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to register for your exams.
